HELP US SAVE JAX
Jax’s story begins with something that should have been simple.
Puppy strangles, when caught early, is often very treatable. With prompt veterinary care, many puppies recover quickly and go on to live full, healthy lives. But Jax didn’t get that chance.
For three full weeks, Jax suffered without treatment. His condition worsened day by day, until his previous owners finally asked for help. By the time Jax came to us, what could have been a manageable illness had turned into a medical emergency.
The moment Jax was in our care, we took him straight to the veterinarian. He was started on IV antibiotics and intensive treatment right away. We were hopeful—but his infection was already severe, and his little body wasn’t responding the way everyone wanted.
Despite aggressive care, Jax continued to struggle.
On January 19, the veterinary team began hydrotherapy in an effort to reduce inflammation and help his wounds heal. We hoped this would be the turning point. Unfortunately, even with this added support, Jax’s condition did not improve enough.
The damage from prolonged untreated infection had already taken hold.
On January 21, Jax underwent sedated wound debridement. During this procedure, veterinarians were forced to remove large amounts of necrotic (dead) tissue in order to stop the infection from spreading further.
So much tissue had to be removed from Jax’s left ear that only cartilage remained.
All of his wounds were carefully cleaned and closed in hopes of giving his body a chance to heal and fight back.
As of today, Jax is still hospitalized and under constant veterinary care. Tomorrow, we will learn whether Jax is able to keep his left ear.
On January 22, Jax woke up alert and active, seemingly happier than yesterday. While its the best news we have gotten from the vet so far, they want to keep him until Monday to watch his ear over the weekend. While it looks better, he is still at risk of losing the left ear flap.
As of January 24, the vets are hopeful to keep at least part of Jax's ear flap. They are still closely monitoring him, cleaning his skin and ears constantly and providing pain medication and antibiotics. He is active and eating well, showing us that he is eager to overcome this infection.
January 27, Jax got to come home to the rescue! He will have twice a week follow up appointments for a while to continue debridement and wound care. He will be extremely spoiled during his stay at the rescue, and we will continue to post updates about him!
February 6, Jax had another important step in his healing journey. He underwent a surgical debridement to continue removing damaged tissue and help healthy skin grow properly. During the same procedure, his problematic dewclaw was removed to prevent future pain and complications.
Even after surgery, Jax bounced back like the resilient little fighter he is. Tail wagging, eyes bright, and ready to play.
February 13, one week later, Jax had his cast removed and attended his follow-up appointment.
Seeing that cast come off felt like another milestone — a visual reminder of just how far he has come. His wounds were healing beautifully, and he continued to show more energy and personality each day.
Because of the severity of the infection early on, Jax did lose over half of his left ear. While it was a difficult reality of the damage he endured before coming to rescue, the remaining portion of his ear is now healthy and strong. It gives him a little extra character — a reminder of his strength and survival.
February 20, big day for our boy!
Jax had his final sutures removed and officially got caught up on his vaccines. This appointment marked the closing of one chapter in his recovery story.
From emergency care and uncertainty… to being healthy enough for routine vaccines. That is growth. That is healing. That is resilience.
Today:
Jax is happy.
Jax is healthy.
Jax is playful.
His fur is growing back beautifully across his face, softening the scars of what he endured. Every day he looks more like a normal, mischievous puppy and less like a medical case.
He’s officially in his “ankle biter” era — full of zoomies, puppy mischief, and nonstop affection. Watching him run, play, and simply be a dog is something we will never take for granted.
Thank you to everyone who stood behind him during the hardest days. Because of you, Jax didn’t just survive — he’s thriving.
No matter the outcome, we are committed to him—fully and completely.
Jax did not choose neglect. He did not choose to go untreated. But he did get one thing right: he held on long enough for help to find him.
And we are not giving up on him now.
